The one body part you’re missing when applying SPF

Do NOT neglect this.

Cathy Donohue

SPF is a beauty essential.

Not just for summer, SPF is something you should wear all year to protect your skin from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

Whether you wear a base with SPF built-in or apply it before your foundation, it really is a must. Once that’s covered, we think we’re doing great but the reality is we often forget about our lips.

Yep, it’s true. I one am definitely guilty of this particular beauty fail.

Speaking to Refinery 29, dermatologist Michael Swann, MD said:

“SPF on the lips is important.

“Lips are actually a common place for skin cancers, and because the barrier function of the skin on the lips is less vigorous, these tumors can quickly behave more aggressively than the same tumors in other locations”.

Karyn Grossman MD, another expert dermatologist, backed up this opinion, explaining that putting SPF on the lips is a “crucial” part of your beauty routine.

Grossman advised that while most lip SPFs are rated under SPF 30, you should be looking for something around the 30 mark, if at all possible.

Another top tip is to remember to reapply. Just keep topping up as this will not only protect your lips, it has the added bonus of keeping them moisturised.
