This Makes Scents – Georgina Ahern on Essential Oils and the Benefits of Aromatherapy

At one point this Bank Holiday weekend, I was sitting dreamily looking at spa destination holidays with a crick in my neck and a pain in my shoulder…

So the inspiration for this piece came easy!

I was dreaming of lying in a nice day spa sipping lemon iced water and receiving a nice shoulder and neck massage to squeeze this niggling pain away. 

It wasn’t an option though, but in the meantime and away from fantasy land - all is not lost and we can treat ourselves. 

We can pop some nice luxurious oils and our moisturisers into a bubble bath whilst creating a nice aroma by lighting an oil burner... make it time to chill, relax and ease any aches away.

Aromatherapy oils are great, and there is such a big variety to choose from. Using these concentrated plant oils can help with many conditions like stress, insomnia and even digestive problems.

Some popular ones to choose from are:

 

Jasmine

Great to use as an antiseptic, the Jasmine flower is known for its sweet, pleasing romantic fragrance - helping you to feel happy and relaxed.

Jasmine is also known for its anti-spasmodic powers; it gives quick relief from coughs, asthma, spasms and cramps.

This one has great relaxing and calming powers, just perfect when you need to relax and unwind.

 

Thyme

Thyme oils are great for their antiseptic and antifungal properties too.

 

Lavender

A massage using lavender oil can really help relief from pain. A bath including lavender oil is calming, relaxing and can help induce sleep.

Lavender oil also improves blood circulation and digestion. Again it has antiseptic and antifungal powers, and has great calming powers on cuts and grazes.

Quite frankly it's amazing!

 

Peppermint

Peppermint oil increases immunity against diseases, and it can be a super home remedy for headaches and nausea.

It's refreshing for your skin and can even brighten up dull skin.

Peppermint oil also has antiseptic properties, which is the reasons why it’s popular in dental care cosmetics – it can remove bad breath and helps fight germs in the mouth.

A few drops in a glass of water can help with digestion as well, and it also helps to calm pains from tummy aches or pains. 

Of course these are only a few suggestions, and there are bundles of positive benefits from so many different oils available to try and test.
