A strange trend of foraging for makeup is gaining popularity thanks to promotion by much-loved YouTubers.
YouTuber Shelbi Orme has more than 35,000 followers and took up the habit when she saw another YouTuber do it.
Orme basically visits large bins outside makeup shops and forages through rubbish to find thrown out display samples and returned items.
Orme then shows her followers how to sterilize and patch up the products in tutorials on her channel.
In one video, the 23-year-old pulled out two urban decay eyeshadow palettes, one of which was in excellent condition and contained pretty much-untouched of shadow.
“When I think about the reality of the world we live in, and the wealth inequality that exists, I compare it to the things that are thrown out like it is no big deal and it blows my mind,” the online vlogger told The Independent.
“Usually, it takes multiple dives to gather up a large amount of make-up with a huge price tag so any one dive can range from zero to $1,000. It is very hit or miss.”
Orme claims her dumpster diving comes from a desire to be an environmentalist. She is not perturbed by the opinions of others.
“Naturally, people judge me and tell me I’m disgusting, poor, or white trash but I do not have time to worry about these people. I’m too busy saving thousands,” she says.
