Another 50 Shades sequel is coming this year

Sarah McKenna Barry

This is not a drill.

A brand spanking (sorry) new Fifty Shades installment will hit bookshops on 1 June 2021.

Freed will be the final book in the hugely popular series by E.L. James.

Unlike the first three books which were narrated by Anastasia Steele, this last sequel will be told from Christian Grey’s perspective.

The concluding installment will follow Christian as he weds Anastasia and settles into married life.

Knowing these two, however, it’s unlikely to be all peaches and cream. The novel will test their relationship as secrets lurk beneath the surface.

While the cover is yet to be revealed, E.L. James teased her followers on Instagram with a sneak peak of what to expect.

Speaking about the upcoming novel, the author said: “I am thrilled to announce the publishing date for Freed.”

She continued: “This story has been a labour of love one that my readers have been eagerly awaiting.”

The author spoke about the process involved in changing narrators: “For me, just as for Anastasia Steele, Christian is a challenging, infuriating, and endlessly fascinating character.”

She continued: “‘Living in his head is exhausting, but I got to explore aspects of his life in Freed that we only glimpsed in the original trilogy, and to follow his emotional growth in response to Ana’s love and compassion.”

Since Fifty Shades of Grey was first published in 2011, the series has become a cultural phenomenon. Despite numerous censorship attempts and poor critical  reception, the series has sold over 125 million copies. As a result, E.L. James is one of the world’s highest earning authors. In 2012, Time Magazine listed her on their Most Influential People list.

The series has also been adapted into a trilogy of films – Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.

Freed will hit bookshelves on 1 June 2021.
