The Irish thriller genre is getting bigger and bigger, but I wasn't taking enough notice of the hype.
Many of my friends would recommend thriller after thriller, but I'd continue to pick up contemporary fiction novels and rom-coms.
However, I challenged myself to read outside of my comfort zone this autumn, and I'm so glad I did.
I was kindly sent a copy of Some of This Is True by Michelle McDonagh, and was gripped from the very first page.
Some of This Is True follows an American mum who travels to Blarney in Co. Cork after the shocking death of her young daughter.
On an icy morning in January, a body is discovered at the bottom of the Wishing Steps at Blarney Castle, seemingly the tragic death by falling of a young tourist.
Jessie DeMarco had travelled to the Cork village in search of the father she'd never known, bringing only a name and the general location of his whereabouts. When her bereft mother, Dani, arrives from America to identify Jessie's body, she brings with her a story of this man's past that will soon lead to shocking accusations – and fervent denials.
Convinced that her daughter's death was not accidental, Dani sets about uncovering evidence, as the local community begins to take sides.
But who will they believe? The highly respected man they have known all their lives, or a devastated mother with nothing to lose?
The thriller is set in the town of Blarney in Co. Cork, where my family is from, so I was captured from the beginning because of the familiar setting.
There's something special about books set in Ireland, especially somewhere so familiar that you can retrace your steps from your last time there through the pages of a novel.
As haunting as this novel is, it's an addictive read, especially with such an eclectic cast of characters.
Dani's story is one that shocks the town of Blarney (and the reader) to its core.
Some of This Is True handles incredibly delicate topics with grace without losing any of the gripping plot points. Michelle McDonagh has crafted quite the perfect thriller, but it's one book that not enough people are talking about.
If you read one book this autumn, then make it Some of This Is True. It's worth a read solely for the twists woven throughout this riveting story.
