“It Is Derogatory and It’s Definitely Not Nice” – Amy Huberman Really Doesn’t Like Being Called a WAG

The star spoke to Irish Tatler magazine.

Ireland’s sweetheart Amy Huberman has opened up about one of her most hated titles – that of WAG.

The popular actress and author is the cover star of Irish Tatler‘s September issue. In the magazine, she explains: “I hated being labelled a WAG when Brian was playing. Yes, you can break down every word, but essentially it is derogatory and it’s definitely not nice. I just think it’s a tacky word and it’s lazy labelling. Like we can’t function unless we compartmentalise women into categories.”

Amy has in the past been referred to as a WAG in relation to her husband, Irish rugby legend Brian O’Driscoll.

Despite her discomfort with that particular term, Amy goes on to say her overall experience of being in the public eye is very positive. So much so that she would not dissuade her young children from following a similar path. “There are pros and cons to everything, but I also think if you want to try it, try it – don’t die wondering. Try it, enjoy it, try not take it too seriously.”

Amy, dressed in Zoe Jordan and Chloé for her cover shoot, also admits that she finds it frustrating that her renowned girl-next-door qualities combined with smart, honest humour can be surprising to people. “A lot of guys come up to me and say, ‘I follow you on Twitter, and you’re actually very funny’, which is hilarious because I know they mean it as a compliment. I think in this day and age we need to stop saying things like that.”
