It's Official! Elton John Sets Wedding Date to Marry Partner David Furnish
Following this weekend's legalisation of same-sex marriage in the UK, Sir Elton John and partner David Furnish have announced they will be getting married in May 2014.
One of the first couples to enter into a civil partnership in 2005, Elton John and David Furnish said they feel a 'duty' to mark their relationship to help raise the profile of such an historic occasion.
Unlike the lavish civil partnership celebrations, David told the Las Vegas Review-Journal:
''We do like big parties. Over eight years ago, we had 650 people on the 21st of December at our house in Windsor.
''But with the kids, everything is different. I think what we'll do is go to a registry office in England in May, and take the boys with us, and a couple of witnesses.''
The couple, who have two sons together, have told Attitude magazine of their joy at being able to address each other as 'husband', rather than 'partner'. David added:
''We're living in extraordinary times. My god, 20 years ago, when I started seeing Elton, if you asked me if I'd be able to get married, if I'd be able to have children, it was unthinkable, literally unimaginable.''
Same-sex couples in civil partnerships are not yet able to convert to marriage in the UK, but the government is hoping to rectify this before the end of the year.
