The film will be available to stream from 28 September.

Netflix has released a trailer for its upcoming Britney Spears documentary, which will examine the singer’s highly publicised conservatorship case.

Britney vs. Spears, directed by Erin Lee Car, will document the shocking story of the popstar’s 13-year-long legal battle for freedom through exclusive interviews, investigative work, and never seen before documents.

“I just want my life back,” the singer can be heard saying in the trailer. “I’ve worked my whole life. I don’t owe these people anything.”

The trailer goes on to show various people discussing the necessity of the conservatorship, as well as the unusual nature of the arrangement. Although the trailer does not divulge the names of those involved in the documentary, among the interviewees are Britney’s ex-boyfriend, paparazzo Adnan Ghalib and a legal expert who specialises in conservatorship cases.

“What was going on inside the conservatorship? And why was she still in one if she was okay?” one voiceover says.

The streaming platform previously posted a short clip to Twitter on Tuesday of a voicemail left by the singer to her lawyer in January 2009, just 12 months into her conservatorship.

In the audio, Britney can be heard asking about “the process of eliminating the conservatorship” – implying that her fight for freedom has been going on since the very beginning.

The 39-year-old was placed under the controversial conservatorship in 2008 after battling mental health issues and suffering a public breakdown.

Her father, Jamie Spears, acted as sole conservator, controlling almost every aspect of her personal life and career.

During her first public court appearance in June 2021, Britney pleaded with a judge to put an end to her “abusive” arrangement.

“I’m not happy, I can’t sleep, I’m depressed, I cry every day,” she said. “I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive.”

In September, a shocking twist occurred in the lengthy legal saga, when Jamie Spears finally filed for the conservatorship to end.

With Britney’s lawyer expecting the arrangement will be terminated “completely and inevitably” some time this Autumn – here’s hoping the star will see freedom soon.
