Warning: this article contains mention of suicide that some people may find distressing.
On Friday night’s episode of The Traitors, one contestant revealed a heartbreaking family tragedy as she broke down in tears.
The BBC series has been a smash hit as millions have tuned in each Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
However, fellow contestants and viewers at home were left devastated by the latest episode, in which Jade, a PhD student, revealed her tragic past.
She opened up about her family history during a discussion about how each remaining player would spend the prize money.
“I would like to buy my own home. My parents got divorced when I was 7. My mum moved back to Hong Kong. She had a kid, and then in 2018, they were both found dead”, she revealed.
“I’ve had to really rebuild myself from that point onwards, and I’m proud of myself for getting this far. I’d just like somewhere I can call my own”, she added.
Further details about the tragic family story were revealed by the Daily Mail, which reported that Jade’s mother, Maggie Fung, and her seven-year-old half-sister died in a murder suicide at their home in the Hong Kong town of Kowloon’s Tai Kok Tsui in August 2018.
According to the Mail, Jade’s mum and her daughter were found lying in bed in each other’s arms by firefighters after a domestic worker raised the alarm.
The report said that they were pronounced dead at the scene, and officers found a suicide note in the apartment.
And to make things more tragic, the two had been dead for some time, perhaps as long as a week, paramedics confirmed.
“I was very close with her, so it was a shock to the system. Our parents form a part of our own identity. I had to rebuild myself. It takes me time to let people in because it takes me a minute to get comfortable. I think it comes across as standoffish at first”, Jade said, speaking on the show.
Many of her fellow players broke down in tears by her heartbreaking confession.
While online, hundreds of viewers commented to show their support.
“Jade’s story is generally heartbreaking,” while another added: “Jade is such a force of nature and a beautifully strong person. If any of the faithfuls win i hope it’s her”, one fan of the show wrote.
