Designated Survivor has OFFICIALLY been renewed for a third season

We can’t WAIT for this.

Designated Survivor has officially been renewed for a third season – a little less than four months after it was cancelled.

The drama starred Kiefer Sutherland as Tom Kirkman, a low-level politician who is pushed into becoming the President of the United States after the entire cabinet was murdered in a massive terror attack.

In May this year, ABC announced that they would not be renewing the show. Fans had been hoping that another network – or even Netflix – would step in and save Kirkman & Co, like what had happened with Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Especially after that season finale.

It looks like fans have now gotten their wish, as Netflix have announced that they are going to be bringing the series back for a third season, made up of 10 episodes.

Deadline report that Neal Baer will be the series’ new show runner, the fifth in three years. The core cast members – including Sutherland, Kat Penn, Adan Canto and Italia Ricci – are all reportedly set to return.

Maggie Q, who played Hannah Wells, is in talks to join them.

The season is said to be tackling “campaigning, smear tactics, debates, campaign finance and ‘fake news'” as President Kirkman seeks re-election as an Independent candidate.

Production is set to begin later this year, with a premiere in 2019.

Sutherland said:

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play President Kirkman for season 3 of ‘Designated Survivor’ with Netflix, eOne and Neal Baer.

“I believe this format will allow us to continue to delve deeply into storylines and issues concerning the American electorate that were not previously possible.”
