An Irish animated short film has been shortlisted for an Academy Award.
Written and directed by Louise Bagnell, Late Afternoon tells the story of an elderly woman with dementia as she recounts her youth through a series of beautifully animated memories.
The film’s trailer shows the woman flicking through a book, eventually descending into the pages herself where she runs through fields, cycles a bike, and explores a cliff face – all as a younger woman.
The Academy Awards shortlist was released today, with Late Afternoon being one of 10 included in the Best Animated Short Film list.

The film was created in Kilkenny based animated studio Cartoon Saloon, best known for their work on The Breadwinner, Song of the Sea, and Secret of Kells.
The final Oscar nominations will be released on January 22, while the ceremony will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019.
