Jamie Dornan Tayto Sandwich

Just no, Jamie.

Jamie Dornan went on Jimmy Kimmel Live this week and wanted to share a true Irish classic with American viewers – the Tayto sandwich.

The Northern Irish star appeared on the popular chat show to discuss his upcoming TV series, The Tourist, as well as his new Netflix thriller Heart of Stone, which he stars in alongside Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot.

As St. Patrick’s Day is approaching, Kimmel figured it was as good a time as any to get Dornan to chat about some Irish foodie favourites – and hence the humble Tayto sandwich came up. Or, as Dornan called it, a Tayto ‘smashie.’

“Ideally, you get the cheapest white bread you can find,” the 39-year-old actor explained.

“There used to be a bread back home called Mighty White which is like sugary death. You go heavy on the mayo both sides. You don’t much around with light Mayonnaise either, you do the real stuff.”

Next, Dornan added slices of ham, informing viewers that ‘the cheaper the better’ as ultimately, ‘it all comes from the same animal.

The main ingredient – Tayto is up next, and using the ones packed in the yellow Northern Irish packaging, Dornan explains:

“Put the entire packet on there. This is maybe the most exciting thing that will happen in your day, your year, your life, is the crunch, that’s why they call it the Tayto smashie.”

And low and behold, Kimmel was an instant fan of the sandwich treat, instantly giving the sandwich the seal of approval, admitting that although he suspected it was going to taste nice, it ‘was about six times more delicious’ than he imagined.

However, it did not take long for Twitter to blow up with Irish people feeling utterly perplexed at Dornan’s Tayto concoction – especially the presence of mayonnaise.

“If Jamie Dornan has an Irish passport it needs to be revoked,” one person wrote.

“That Tayto ‘smashie’ abomination he made on Kimmel is a crime.”

Another one said:

“Jamie Dornan, I’m so disappointed. Seroiusly, Who puts Mayonnaise instead of butter on a Tayto Sandwich?? Throw up in my mouth & seething with rage even thinking about it…. #FoodOfTheGods.”
