Normal People season two? Lenny Abrahamson would like to revisit series “in five years”

Same, Lenny. Same.

It seems like years at this point that the glorious, incredible, and downright perfect Normal People graced our screens.

Lockdown didn’t know what hit it, as suddenly every single person in Ireland was hooked to a series about miscommunication, sex, and two very good looking people who simply could not be together.

There was a lot more to Normal People than the above, but that’s a fairly decent summary for those among us who have yet to watch it.

Seriously, do yourself a favour. You deserve.

Another thing we all deserve is more episodes of the BBC / Hulu series to tide us over until the next TV show that encapsulates the nation comes along.

Unfortunately for us, it doesn’t look like that’ll be happening any time soon (author Sally Rooney is pretty adamant that she ended the story where it was supposed to end), but still – that doesn’t mean that we can’t dream.

Sure, even director Lenny Abrahamson is doing it. He knows full well that Connell and Marianne’s story is over, and still, he would like to revisit the series in five or so years time, just to see where the characters have ended up.

He told Deadline that although he would love to delve back into the world of Connell and Marianne for a second season, he is adamant that “there needs to be time.”

“We’ve talked about the possibility of how interesting it would be to check back in with them,” he said. “But apart from just general musings and over a drink, no, there have been no concrete discussions about what it would be like.

“As Sally says, the book stops where it stops because it feels right. But, I have a sneaking thing in the back of my head that if everybody was willing, and if the stars aligned, I’d love to revisit them in five years and find out what happened, where they are.

“Is somebody a father or a mother? What relationships are they in that then get disrupted by their meeting again? But it would be really strange to pick that up eight weeks later with him traveling to New York, I think. There needs to be time.”

Normal People ended as Connell seemingly made the decision to head off to New York to study, leaving Marianne back in Sligo.

The conclusion was an ambivalent one, leaving the paths both characters take open to interpretation. And although it does seem like we’ve seen the last of Normal People for a good while yet, there’s always 2025.

Fingers crossed.
