To quote a recent remark made by Barack Obama: “Playing like a girl means you’re a badass”, and Jessica Jones (played by Krysten Ritter) is a total badass.
Her no-nonsense attitude and streetwise, ass-kicking moves make for some compelling viewing.
But there's more to Jessica than just her badass antics.
She's a fully-formed, warts and all kind of character which makes her all the more appealing.
The world of TV is sorely lacking in strong, complex female characters, but we've definitely got one in Jessica.
2. It’s packed with strong female characters
Powerful female characters are at the heart of the show. Beyond Jessica, we also meet high-profile power lawyer, Jery Hogarth (Carrie-Ann Moss), and super successful radio host, Trish Walker (Rachel Taylor).
Jery is a cut-throat attorney embroiled in an affair with her assistant, and the only person who seems to be able to stand up to her is Jessica.
Trish is Jessica's ride-or-die BFF, and the relationship between the two characters produces some of the most heart-warming and humorous moments of the show.
3. There’s plenty of suspense
If you're looking for a decent thriller series, you're going to love this show.
We’re left in the dark about what exactly has happened to Jessica before we meet her, but we do know that it’s not good. It's really, really bad.
Prepare yourself for plenty of mystery, mind control, and some serious jump-out-of your-seat moments.
4. David Tennant is a brilliant bad guy
Tennant plays the Kilgrave, the show's main antagonist, and he's excellent. This is a long way from Broadchurch, people.
Kilgrave is a suited and booted evil mind controller whose looming off-screen presence can be felt from the get-go. The true extent of his villainous ways is slowly revealed, and when he does make an appearance, he's frankly terrifying.
5. It’ll make you chuckle
Despite its dark themes, the show has a great sense of humour about it. In the midst of all the suspense, Jessica’s withering looks and oh-so-dry wit are a constant, and the interplay between herself and Trish provides some brilliant moments of comic relief.
6. The sub-plots are full of intrigue
Beyond the central storyline of Jessica vs. Kilgrave, there are some great secondary story-lines.
From an office affair and messy divorce, to an unlikely love story, there are some great subplots throughout Marvel’s Jessica Jones. The show isn't afraid to tackle gritty real-world issues either.
One thing’s for sure: you're going to be gripped until the closing credits; you can take our word for that.
