This is shocking.

Pretty Woman has to be one of the best rom coms of all time. It's a classic which still works 26 years since it was released. Back in 1990 when it first hit cinemas, Julia Roberts was a relatively unknown actress and this movie pretty much made her career. Starring alongside Richard Gere, it was the perfect unpredictable love story. The story centers around a prostitute named Vivian (Julia's character) who ends up falling in love with businessman Edward Lewis (Richard's character) after he hires her for a week to be his escort. They had the perfect love story ending, but it turns out that it wasn't originally supposed to end that way. The other version is absolutely awful. According to Digital Spy, it was originally supposed to be called $3,000, which was referencing the amount of money Vivian got paid by Edward. But it didn't stop there. In that story, Vivian was addicted to drugs and was supposed to have "blank and empty eyes". And the ending was by far the worst part which saw Edward throwing Vivian and her $3,000 out of his car and her best friend Kit dying from a drug overdose. Julia confirmed this in a recent interview saying:

"At the end of the original script, Richard's character threw my character out of the car, threw the money on top of her and drove away and the credits rolled."

Talk about completely opposite endings. It looks like it was down to the screenwriter, JF Lawton, because he previously told Vanity Fair:

"I was a screenwriter who was trying to get a job, I was unemployed and I was working in post-production and I was trying to sell scripts, and I had been writing all of these ninja scripts and comedies, and I just couldn't get any attention. I suddenly said, 'Well, maybe I need to do something more serious and dramatic'."

Thankfully the director Garry Marshall got them to make several rewrites and they landed on the love story we're all familiar with. Phew!
