Kat O'Connor

Love Island star Zara McDermott will take part in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing.

Reality star Zara McDermott makes history as the first-ever Love Island contestant to sign up for the show.

The BBC announced the documentary maker as this year’s seventh contestant.

Zara said taking part in Strictly feels like a dream as it played a huge role in her childhood.

The 26-year-old shared, “I am so excited to be joining the world of Strictly! I grew up watching it every year with my nan.

Zara continued, “She was the biggest Strictly fan.”

“We would dance around the house and I have such fond memories of that time in my life,” the Love Island star continued.

“I even remember the first ever series, and being mesmerised by all the beautiful dresses! I can’t wait to throw myself into this experience and start training. It’s going to be incredible,” she shared.

Zara joins Irish TV presenter, Angela Scanlon, broadcaster Angela Lippon, actor and West End star Layton Williams and news presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy.

Comedian Eddie Kadi and actress Amanda Abbington will also take part in this year’s show.

More contestants are expected to be announced later this week.

Actor Adam Thomas and Downton Abbey’s Nigel Harman are also rumoured to be taking part.

The return date for this year’s Strictly has not yet been confirmed, but the show usually returns to TV in September.
