Alysia Montano completed the 800m at the US Track and Field Championships for the fifth time this week, despite being 34 weeks pregnant.

The 28-year old, who has won the 800m national title the past four years was, took part in the race just seven weeks before she is due to give birth to her first child.

Montano raced around in two minutes, 32.13 seconds in the qualifying round.

Despite being the last of the runners in the pack, the crowd at the Hornet Stadium cheered on the athlete, giving her a standing ovation as she made her way to the finish line.

Montano said she had been enjoying the exercise during her pregnancy:

“I’ve been running throughout my pregnancy and I felt really, really good during the whole process.

“I just didn’t want to get lapped and be the first person to get lapped in the 800m.”

Montano consulted doctors about her plan to run, who helped her map out a training schedule for the event.
