An Irish boy’s name was the most popular in the US last year

Liam reigns supreme, and it’s not the first time.

An Irish name topped the list of most popular boy’s names in the US last year, and it’s easy to understand why.

Liam, which is the shortened form of Uilliam (William) has always been a beloved name in Ireland, but in recent years its popularity around the world has skyrocketed, and last year it topped the list of the most popular baby names for boys in the United States.

That’s according to data from the Social Security Administration which rounded up data pertaining to the top 1,000 baby names in the country.

What’s more, the popularity of this cute Irish name in the US is nothing new. It first entered the Top 10 in 2013 (at number 6), and from there it only climbed further. In 2014, it reach number 5, and the following year it climbed one place to number 4 where it stayed throughout 2016. Then, in 2017, it was the second most popular name before finally reaching the top spot in 2018. Since then, it’s reigned supreme, with 2022 being its fourth year running as the most popular boy’s baby name.

As well as Liam just being a gorgeous-sounding name, some famous Liams around the world are bound to have played a role in its booming success. From Neeson to Hemsworth to Payne – there are plenty of famous Liams flying the flag.

Liam isn’t the only Irish name booming in popularity outside of the Emerald Isle. Maeve has been steadily growing in popularity in the US since about 2000.
