Is this the best granny in Ireland? We’re inclined to think so! Mary O’Donoghue from Meath became a ‘supernan’ when her grandchild decided to make a speedy arrival into the world.
The Irish Sun reports that Shauna, Mary’s daughter-in-law, had woken up at 6.30am with intense labour pains.
“I had a contraction as I was on the phone to my mum Angela asking her to babysit our two boys. As I had that contraction I just knew I wasn’t going to make it to hospital,” said Shauna.
Mary, who lives across the road from her son Paul and Shauna (his partner), said: “At 6.54am Shauna rang me to come over and I got dressed so quickly I had odd socks on. I looked out and saw her hanging to the porch and she knew and I knew she wouldn’t make it to the hospital.”
Mary helped Shauna back inside her home and the pair realised that the baby would be making an appearance sooner rather than later.

Shauna gave birth to a baby girl called Amy
“She held onto the fireplace and then her waters broke. I put her lying on the floor and I knelt down beside her and could see the baby’s head,” said Mary.
“With three pushes the head was out and I took her little head in my hands and she eased out. It was just magic! The baby let out a little cry and I was nearly crying with emotion! I rubbed her and could see her little hands moving. She was born at about one minute past seven,” Mary added.
Shauna’s mother Angela, who lives ten minutes away, said that she ran to the house after Shauna rang her to tell her the baby was coming.
Angela wrapped the little girl, called Amy, in a blanket and made sure she was kept warm until an ambulance arrived.
“I felt helpless... It was as much a shock as my numbers coming up on the lotto!” saidnew dad Paul.
Paul and Shauna’s two other children, Jack and Ben, slept through the arrival of their baby sister.
Shauna and Amy are doing great and we have to say, we think granny Mary has definitely earned the title of ‘supernan’ after this!
