So this is actually happening on Irish television right now: an Irish couple, Emma and Darragh, are on The Morning Show road-testing the latest celebrity craze – the placenta smoothie.
Just in case you’re not sure what a placenta smoothie is, allow us to explain. It’s made from bananas, mangos, blueberries, a host of other fruit and a human placenta that has been chilled in the fridge overnight.
After welcoming their new-born daughter Matilda into the world, Darragh and Emma decided that the placenta smoothie was something that they wanted to try. Darragh brought his wife’s placenta home and stuck it in the fridge. He then invited Lorraine Duffy, a placenta smoothie specialist, into his home to make it.
First Lorraine sterilises the entire kitchen to stop any contamination from occurring.

Next, she has a look at the placenta (WARNING: this is fairly graphic, so if you’re just about eat or if you have a weak stomach you might want to avoid it).

Next, Lorraine uses a liquidiser on the placenta to mush it up so she can add it to the smoothie.

A healthy piece of the placenta is then blended with the fruit and Darragh brings it into his wife, who is currently still in hospital recovering.

It’s believed that eating or drinking your placenta after giving birth can help your body to recover faster and replenish some of the nutrients that are lost in childbirth.
