National radio broadcaster Louise McSharry said this morning that she has been diagnosed with cancer.

The 31-year-old presents an evening show on RTÉ’s 2fm. Earlier today, she spoke about her diagnosis on the station, saying she learned last week that she has Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Louise said her first reaction was “what am I going to do now?”, but added that she is determined to remain positive.

The presenter described herself as “very lucky”, adding that Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a curable cancer and that 80 per cent of those diagnosed are cured after their first round of treatment.

Speaking to Ryan Tubridy, for whom she has filled in on several occasions, Louise said that she had been suffering from ill health for some time. Last December, she had her appendix removed, but lost her appetite afterwards. She also had trouble sleeping and her periods stopped.

After rounds of tests, Ms McSharry returned to hospital last week and a consultant told her that she had cancer.

Louise, who is set to wed long-term partner Gordon Spierin next year, said “I have genuinely no doubt I’m going to be fine.”

“I’m going to do six months of chemotherapy and after six months, they’re going to tell me I’m cured and can go back to my life.
