For ages health experts have told women that the ‘pear’ shape is the healthiest body shape a woman can have. Now, however, some new research from the US is claiming that pear-shaped women are just as likely to get heart disease as apple-shaped ones.
We’ve long known that us womenfolk tend to gain weight in two main areas – our tummies and our hips. Apple-shaped ladies tend to carry a few extra curves in the stomach/waist area, while pear-shaped women tend to carry weight around their hips and thighs.
The pear-shape was thought to protect women against heart disease and diabetes because fat deposited in the bottom, hip and thigh areas which was seen as being less dangerous than fat which deposited itself directly in the waist region.
However, according to some new research from the University of California, this is a myth and could, in fact, actually CAUSE such diseases in women.

Researchers now believe that fat stored in the bum area produces proteins that can lead to pre-diabetic conditions and make sufferers resistant to insulin.
After testing women and men who subscribed to both different body shapes, the study revealed that the two body shapes were equally likely to suffer from diabetes and heart disease.
