Think of that feeling you have when you’re around someone negative… all you want to do is turn around and leave.
You might have started the day on a positive buzz but it is ever so slowly, but surely, dripping away. Negativity is such a strong emotion it can easily influence the moods of those around.
How can you respond to negativity and keep a positive attitude throughout the day?
You’re not going to change anybody’s personality with these tips, but if you take them on board it will definitely be easier to stay sane and not let the infectious negativity affect you.
Listen, But Don't Get Involved
If the person wants to rant or share their negativity, let them. It will be easier to understand their problem if you understand where there are coming from. It doesn’t justify their negativity, but your firmness and positive attitude could influence them.
Don’t Be Afraid To Leave If You Can’t Take It
Protect the positive space around you. If someone’s negativity is too strong, don’t be afraid to make your excuses and leave. Stay positive, apologise, but explain that you will talk to them later.
Think Of Something Positive
If you are caught listening to someone rant on about what grinds their gears, try and steer the conversation towards something more positive. Bring up an upcoming event or mention that it’s nice for a walk. It’ll help shine some positivity on the moment.
Don’t Get Caught Up In The Moment
Stick with the facts. Your friend might start bitching and negative emotions might start taking over, but stay objective to the situation at hand. Don’t be afraid to correct your friend if emotions blur her facts of the story.
Be Harsh. What Are You Actually Getting From It?
Be honest with yourself. What do you actually get from the relationship? Have you fallen into the caretaker role? A friendship needs to work both ways.
Remember The Stats
Research shows that people with negative attitudes have significantly higher rates of stress and disease. Your mental state plays a huge role in your physical health. If someone is making life difficult for everyone else, you can be sure they’re making their own life difficult. Don’t be afraid to have a chat and ask them how they are really feeling.
