Star Wars star Carrie Fisher appeared on the Saturday Night Show last night and spoke about her mental health, her drug abuse and weightloss.
Speaking to host Brendan O'Connor, the actress said that electric shock treatment has worked for her in treating her bipolar disorder.
"As far as I can remember, it worked for me but it does shred your memory," she said.
"It did work for me, it's not like convulsions any more. There's part of me that thinks, ‘oh I wish I never started talking about this because now people think I'm nuts’ but I'm not - I just play that on TV”.
She credited her manic depression to her Irish heritage, saying: "the part of my family that the manic depression comes from is the Irish side who had a commitment to alcoholism that was beautiful".
The actress said that speaking openly on TV does help with her depression: "Everyone knows that's [depression] shite, that's the worst thing going - but mania can be great, But the kind-of problem I have now is that I fall over things, I'm spilling everything, I'm getting ahead of myself.
“That sounds like it's just an expression but you feel you can't catch up with yourself. I'm forever running behind me going 'wait'!"
