In a Rolling Stone interview recently, actress Evan Rachel Wood alluded to “physical, psychological, sexual” abuse that she had suffered in the past.
Now the 29-year-old has shared a candid letter in which she reveals that she was raped twice.
“I started questioning my reasons for staying vague about my experiences as a girl growing up in America,” begins the actress.
She reveals that she worries about perception.
“I think, like a lot of women, I had the urge to not make it a sob story, to not make it about me.”
Wood says that she is afraid people will assume she is revealing her story for attention or worse, people will claim it’s “not really rape.”
“Yes. I have been raped,” she writes.
“By a significant other while we were together, And on a separate occasion, by the owner of a bar.”
Wood says that when she was with this significant other, she was unsure whether “if it was done by a partner, it was still in fact rape.”
During the second time, Wood says that she felt like it was her fault for not fighting back more.
Wood further admits that the two incidents led to a suicide attempt.
Wood famously dated Marilyn Manson. Wood has stated that she was attracted to Manson’s frequent use of black eye liner and once described their relationship as “healthy and loving.”
The actress was also married to actor Jamie Bell, with whom she has one son.
