This is where fat actually goes when you lose weight

Mind = blown.

Anna O'Rourke

Makes sense.

It’s a question that’s always puzzled us, but one that you’d kind of be afraid to ask out loud for fear of sounding stupid.

Well, between us all, we’re sure we can be honest – we’ve always wanted to know where fat goes when it’s burned off.

Like, there are wonderful stories of people losing half their body weight, but where does all of the excess flesh go?

Thankfully, we weren’t the only ones wondering. The team at Popsugar were anxious to know too and so they asked a professional.

“The correct answer is that most of the mass is breathed out as carbon dioxide,” explained physicist Ruben Meerman, MD.

“It goes into thin air.”

Sounds mad, right – solid mass just turning to air? But that is what happens to most of it, while the rest leaves the body in urine, faeces, sweating, and tears. Lovely.

It does make sense, if you think about how slow burning fat can be, and we can now finally tick that off our list of stupid questions that keep us up at night.

Other ones we like to ponder – could the world ever run out of songs? Why aren’t blueberries blue? And do dentists go to other dentists or do they just do it themselves?
