Frances Fitzgerald has said that the first draft of new abortion legislation will be brought to government in the next week.
The Minister For Children explained that they believe it is vital that legislation clarifying the circumstances during which an abortion can be performed is introduced.
Frances Fitzgerald said that the government is committed to the legislation.
According to reports she said: “The Taoiseach has made it very clear that he will bring in legislation that will clarify these issues. There is a very strong commitment from the government to do that.
“The plan is to bring in the draft in the next week or so and bring legislation before the summer.”
Savita Halappanavar died after her request for an abortion was turned down.
The move comes in the wake of the inquest into Savita Halappanavar’s death. The 31-year-old dentist died from an infection after her request for an abortion was refused at Galway University Hospital.
Yesterday the jury delivered a verdict of “medical misadventure” and also endorsed nine recommendations for abortion laws in Ireland.
