Fizzy drinks have been in the press a lot lately with regards to the impact that they have on our health, but now scientists are warning that they could also pose a risk to our life! Scary or what?
According to some new research from Japan, women who consume one fizzy drink every day could be increasing their risk of having a life-threatening stroke. Really.
Researchers at Osaka University discovered that a daily consumption of sugary drinks raises a woman’s chances of developing a blood clot in her brain by approximately 80 per cent. In direct comparison, there was only a slight increase in the risk when it came to the opposite sex.
These findings support another bit of research from the US which was published earlier this year. The US-based research found that both full-fat and diet fizzy drinks raised the chance of having a stroke in men and women.

Fizzy drinks have been in the media a lot recently...
In relation to the Japan-based research, this is the first time that a study has examined the precise link between consumption of fizzy drinks and the development of blood clots in the brain.
The Osaka University researchers followed almost 40,000 men and women in the 40-59 age bracket who drank a fizzy beverage every day. The results revealed that those who consumed one on a daily basis were 83 per cent more likely to suffer an ischaemic stroke – a stroke caused by a clot shutting off the blood supply to the brain.
“Soft drink intake was positively associated with risk of ischaemic stroke for women,” said the researchers.
Hmm…we think we’ll be limiting our fizzy drink consumption from now on…
