Spotlight On: 9 Amazing Things Your Vagina Can Do

We answer all of the questions that you are too afraid to ask.

Over the last number of months, we’ve learned a thing or two about the wide range of contraceptives that are available on the market today.

Now, we are going to continue our focus on health by studying a wide range of topics relating to sex and sexual health.

Last week, we focused on problems in the bedroom, while this week we’re bringing sexy back… again!

We’ve already learned a thing or two about keeping your vagina happy but now, prepare to be amazed ladies as we discover some pretty cool things your vagina does.

Orgasm… and not just once
No, no. The vagina can in fact have four different kinds of orgasm. Yes, four. These can be divided into vaginal, clitoral, blended and multiple.

First up, a vaginal orgasm is usually as a result of vaginal penetration with little or no clitoral stimulation. Speaking of the clitoris, a clitoral orgasm is an orgasm brought on by stimulation of the clitoris without vaginal penetration.

With those two out of the way though, we move on to the far more complicated (but amazingly enjoyable) blended orgasm which comes from clitoral, vaginal and often cervical stimulation, while multiple orgasms is the ability to orgasm a number of times.

One woman achieved 134 orgasms in one hour. Wow.

It can expand
You might think eh, duh, childbirth, but we don’t just mean then. When you’re having sexy time, the blood vessels in the vagina dilate when you are aroused, and the more turned on you are, the bigger it could get – bigger by 200 per cent in fact!

Nice and clean

Your vagina has a self-cleaning mechanism – random, we know, but also true.

In fact, that’s what vaginal discharge is for. If this discharge is clear or white-ish in colour that’s healthy as it’s getting rid of bacteria and old cells.

The way he kisses you: The kiss is probably one of the easiest ways to decipher what your man will be like when it comes to sex. If he’s a good kisser, he’ll be passionate and romantic in bed. If he cups your face in his hands, it’s a sign that he wants you to reciprocate his moves. Remember: kisses are important. If his smooch leaves you weak at the knees then you’re onto a winner in the bedroom stakes.

You can work it out
Yes, it’s that time ladies, time to get your pelvic floor muscles going. You can build up a stronger vagina by doing some pelvic floor exercises which are extremely effective and are the equivalent of going to the gym (but for your vagina). Also if you cut out the caffeine you will have a much healthier vagina.

It looks after itself
But that’s not to say that you shouldn’t look after it too. The vagina is great at protecting itself and that’s all thanks to the cervix, which works like a barrier between the vagina and the uterus.

7. Sex helps you to work up a sweat: Can’t get to the gym? Get to the bedroom instead. Spending some time getting jiggy can give you a great workout. According to fitness experts, having sex has the same effect on your blood flow as spending an hour doing a Zumba workout.

It can tell you the time
Baby making time that is. The vagina will let you know when is the best time to get pregnant as, if you are not taking oral contraceptives, it will release a mucus during ovulation.

It’s been known to trap a penis
Seriously. While extremely rare, the vagina can in fact trap a penis, as the pelvic muscles can clamp down tighter than normal making it extremely difficult to remove a penis. This is known as penis captivus.

It can stay balanced
The vagina is PH balanced to keep itself happy, healthy and to neutralize the environment.

Childbirth
No words necessary. Simply awesome.

Honorary mention:

Random fact: The word vagina roughly translates as sword holder in Latin.

And remember…

Although a smear test is of the cervix and not the vagina, this is merely a gentle reminder about how important it is to get a regular smear test as it detects changes in the cells of the cervix.
