#stayathome: Dublin’s Headon Boxing Academy launches new online fitness classes

Keeley Ryan

Headon Boxing Academy has launched a new online programme to help you stay healthy while staying at home.

It features 40 – yes, you read that number correctly – online classes per week, specially designed to burn up to 500 calories from your sitting room.

The programme features the original HBA Signature Session, a high intensity workout that allows you to train like a boxer, without getting hit.

The 60-minute session covers the key aspects of a boxers training, technique, strength training and cardio.

If you’re looking for something ta bit faster paced, there’s HBA 10 Rounds, a 45-minute high intensity workout incorporating shadow boxing and variety of bodyweight exercises.

The classes are suitable for all levels from beginners to those more experienced on the pads – perfect for anyone looking to get fighting fit and learn a new skill at the same time.

Headon Boxing Academy was founded by Dublin twins Sean and Paddy, both of whom are Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) coaches and former junior Irish Boxing Champions.

It is normally run from its three boxing studios in Sandyford, Grand Canal Dock and Ballsbridge. However, when faced with closing their gyms temporarily in response to Covid-19, the twins decided to develop a digital programme for its members to join from home – all you need are some water bottles as makeshift weights and Wi-Fi.

“What’s happening in the world right now is hard to swallow. We did what we had to do to keep our team and community safe. With our gyms temporarily closed, we wanted to find another way to reach our community and new members alike,” Paddy said.

“The main reason we moved online was to fight back. People’s routines were thrown into chaos, and it’s scary. But, exercise is in our control – and boxing is incredible in terms of stress relief, improving your mood and self-confidence. We hope punching will help get us and our community through the next few weeks.”

“The HBA digital programme requires no equipment whatsoever – it focuses solely on shadowboxing, bodyweight movements, core work and cardio challenges. We have partnered with a leading audio and video company to delivering a high quality online workout experience,” Sean added.

To support its members Headon Boxing Academy is offering reduced rates temporarily as the business moves online.

There is pay as you go, flyweight, middleweight and heavyweight membership available. For more information visit https://headonboxing.ie.
