Downton Abbey may be back on the small screen at Christmas but according to Lloyds Online Doctor Ireland, it’s not the only ‘period drama’ that women can experience during the festive season.
A recent study found that almost two thirds of women have missed a contraceptive pill, had to use the emergency pill or had an unplanned pregnancy at this time of the year. One in six Irish women said that they had missed a pill because they had been drunk whilst one in seven admitted that they have forgotten to take one due to the hustle and bustle of Christmas.
Half of those asked also said they have struggled to find the time to get a repeat prescription during the holidays, with one third of respondents forgetting to get to their doctors in time and missing their next course. What is even more surprising is that one in seven Irish women has pretended to be ill at work to attend a GP appointment over the festive period.
This is why Lloyds Online Doctor Ireland is providing information and support for women online over Christmas. They also provide a
service which allows women to order a repeat prescription for the pill online and have it sent to their preferred address.
Dr Tom Brett, Medical Director for Lloyds Online Doctor Ireland said: “We often see peaks in our contraceptive services after the weekend but during November and December, as the party season gets underway, there is a clear and significant uplift in orders.
“The combination of an increased need for contraceptive services with reduced hours at local GP surgeries over the festive holiday period can leave some women wondering where to go as many might not be aware that it is possible to seek this sort of help online.”
Here is the video they made to spread awareness about the contraceptive risks that increase at this time of the year...
