This year we at Her.ie have paired up with the Irish Cancer Society for the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon.
We've been recruiting readers to join us, (you can do so here!), and we've been bringing you training tips and inspirational testimonials from those who have taken on the challenge before, as well as women who work with the Irish Cancer Society, or those who have been on the receiving end of the service.
Today is the third in our Uphill Challenge Made Easy features, a reminder that training, though tough, can be both fun and exciting. We’re suggesting that you skip the gym once a week, and instead of the treadmill head for the great outdoors and take your fitness preparations to one of Ireland’s many natural beauty spots. Become a tourist in your own land in the months ahead of the June run – training has never looked so lovely! We’ve already shared some Munster and Connacht looped hill walks, now it's time to focus on Ulster!
Ulster Hill Walks to Try:
Fermanagh
Aghanaglack Walk, Ballintempo Forest
Aghanaglack is part of the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark. This circular walk within Ballintempo Forest in west Fermanagh is largely along forest tracks and covers seven miles. Ballintempo Forest forms one section of the largest continuous forestry tract in Northern Ireland and is host to a variety of beautiful birds and amazing wildlife.
Bearnagh and Meelmore
Slieve Bearnagh is one the the most distinctive mountains in the Mournes and renowned for the granite tors on its summit, and Slieve Meelmore is included in this walk, creating a look with spectacular views on a good day stretching as far as the Sperrins, Lough Neagh and Strangford Lough. This walk covers a distance of six miles.
Antrim
North Antrim Cliff Path to Dunseverick Castle
This well maintained walkway follows a key section of the longer Causeway Coast Way & Ulster Way. Nearly 5 miles in length, this section of coast from Giant’s Causeway to Dunseverick Castle is officially referred to as the North Antrim Cliff Path (& maintained by The National Trust). Again, expect incredible scenery and wildlife! This walk covers just under five miles.
