Brought to you by Newstalk’s George Hook. Tune into High Noon from 12-2pm every day this week to get more Valentine’s Day advice.

Whether you love it or hate it there’s no escaping Valentine’s Day.

When you take away all the commercialised parts of the holiday it is actually quite nice to spend some time with your significant other or even your best friend.

If you do decide to celebrate and feel the love this Valentine’s Day then we have some top tips for making it the best one yet.

Don’t worry there is nothing too cheesy.

Luckily, we sat down with self-styled ‘love machine’ George Hook to get his take on how to get the stress out of the situation…
Don’t bring your phone

How many times have you been having dinner with your best friend or your other half and you have both spent the entire meal staring at your phones? Unfortunately, that is just how we work nowadays. Try to keep the phones at home this Valentine’s Day and actually talk to each other over your meal. You never know you might even enjoy it.

Get dressed up for the occasion

We’re not talking black tie or anything but it is nice to make a little bit of an effort for a special occasion. Wear your new top or your favourite jeans and you’re guaranteed to feel more excited about the night ahead.

Don’t go overboard

It can be easy to get carried away and go all out on Valentine’s Day but there is nothing worse than sitting in a restaurant worrying about how expensive your bill is going to be. If you have a budget stick to it and you’ll be able to enjoy yourself so much more. Sometimes a nice takeaway or a home cooked meal is all that you want.

Don’t spend the whole time talking about yourself

Or moaning. And that goes for both parties. Try to forget about the everyday conversations that you have most evenings. That means don’t spend the entire time gossiping about yer wan at work or complaining about your next door neighbour.

Go old school

Listen, a little romance never killed anyone. It’s easy to put all those things aside if you’ve been in a relationship for a long time but something as simple as holding hands is nice every once in a while. Go on, you love it, admit it.
