6 things no one tells you about trying for a baby

Her

Brought to you by Clonfolic.

Are you TTC?

That’s Trying to Conceive in case you weren’t sure.

Whether you’ve been trying for months, or you’re only toying with the idea, very soon you’ll realise that there are a few things that everyone (conveniently) forgot to tell you about trying to make a baby.

Here are some of our favourites.

1. You will have to use approximately 4,567 pregnancy tests

And those little things can be expensive. Yet you’ll find yourself using two or three in a row just to make sure that the result was correct.

2. Google will become your best friend…

And your worst enemy. If you find yourself researching ancient Egyptian conceiving techniques at 2 am in the morning put the phone down lady. The best advice (and the advice you should trust) is from your GP.

3. You’ll need that folic acid.

If you happen to be around a nurse or doctor, the chances are you wont stop hearing about the importance of this stuff! But most of us aren’t, so don’t forget about folic acid. It’s SO crucial, even women who are not trying for a baby, but are of a baby-bearing age should totally be taking this… just in case!

Taking folic acid each day (as part of a balanced diet) can help reduce a baby’s risk of having Spina Bifida by up to 70 percent! The neural tube defect means the spinal cord does not develop properly in the womb. Ireland has one of the highest rates of Spina Bifida in the world and so taking folic acid, which is a synthetic form of Vitamin B9, is incredibly important to ensure we are not deficient. It keeps the likes of anaemia at bay too!

4. Don’t panic!!!!

Did that just make you panic? Indeed it probably did. What no one really says is… It takes time to become pregnant, it’s a progress, and it doesn’t always happen in the blink of an eye. Take good care of yourself, eat well, exercise (and they don’t need to be Arnold Schwarzenegger style workouts), find a hobby or activity that takes you away from work entirely and allows you to just breathe… There’s no better way to chill out.

5. Your head will spin from all the math.

Okay, so I had my period two weeks ago, how many days until I am ovulating? Prepare to become a baby planning pro and a mucous expert (listen, it happens).

6. Every little sign is telling you you’re pregnant

”I’ve got heartburn, I must be pregnant.”

”My boobs hurt, surely I’m pregnant.”

”That dog looked at me funny, he definitely knows I’m pregnant,”
