Dating is hard, but first dates are even harder.
You're a big ball of nervousness and excitement. You're desperately trying to be polite, interesting and mysterious all in one go .
It was all fine and dandy when you were talking over Tinder every night, but there is something slightly awkward about sitting across from him over dinner and drinks.
Here are the things all girls (well all of us anyways) do before a first date.
A bit of investigative work...
Are you even going on a date if you don't check out his Facebook before hand? Eh, I don't think so. While you're there you will probably look at his Instagram, his Twitter and possibly his LinkedIn if you're going for broke.
By the time the date rolls around you'll know who his best friend is, what his sister did at college and whether or not his ex is still in the picture. You will have prepared conversation topics around his favourite movies and bands as well. CSI will be giving you a call any day now.
The full body shave
The morning of your date you swanned into Boots and picked yourself up every sort of hair removal product you can imagine. Fancy razors, hair removal cream, wax strips, epilators you've got them all. You won't be happy until your silky smooth and feeling amazing.
Freak out over your outfit
What do you wear on a first date? Is a dress too fancy? If you wear runners does it look like you haven't made an effort? More likely than not you will ditch the new outfit you spent all day Saturday searching for and go back to something you've worn a million times before and feel comfy in. If in doubt the classic 'jeans and a nice top' combo can never do you wrong.
Picture your long and happy life together
It's only natural to wonder. What if this is the date you tell your grandkids about? The first date with your future husband. You want to remember this moment. This is it you can feel it.
Set up your emergency call
You quickly snap out of it and realise this might not be the date of your dreams. In case it doesn't all go to plan you decide to call in your bestie's help.
At precisely 8.15pm she will ring you to let you know that her pet gerbil has taken ill and she needs you to come to her house and take them both to the vet ASAP. She really can't get anyone else to do it and of course you will have to oblige, Snowflake's life is on the line.
Almost bail
That's it you're not going. This is all too much stress and you're actually quite happy being single. Who needs a significant other anyway? You would much rather spend your time watching Netflix, internet shopping, or going out with the girls. Yup, that's it you're staying in for the night and you will literally use any excuse to validate your decision.
Completely miscalculate the time
Eventually, you will snap out of it, realise he's a nice guy and you should really give him a chance. You wasted a good 20 minutes debating whether or not you should go so now you are completely off schedule.
You are either sitting ready an hour before he is due to pick you up or you have only curled half your hair when the doorbell goes. Either way, it's just one big stress-fest.
Check there is nothing in your teeth
Not once, not twice but multiple times. There is nothing like the paranoia surrounding having something stuck between your teeth on a first date. Why oh why did I have that garlic bread for lunch? There are little green leaves everywhere. The crisis is only made worse if you decide to wear lipstick.
Put in one last message to the girls
You need one more motivational push to get you out the door and your besties are the ones to give it to you. You drop them a quick line on the WhatsApp group to let them know you're off out for the night.
They will dutifully reply to tell you your outfit/ makeup/ hair is on point and to have a lovely time. They also slip in that they're meeting up for drinks later so if the date is a bust they can meet you straight away. They will be buzzing to get all the details. What heroes!
