No matter how much you love Nutella, we can pretty much guarantee that you don’t love it as much as the students of Columbia University. According to a report, students at the college in the States consume up to 100 pounds of the stuff every single day and it’s costing the university a fortune.
The Columbia Spectator reports that college officials suspect the high demand for the hazelnut chocolate spread is all down to sneaky undergrads taking extra amounts back to their dorm rooms. Those pesky students!
“The demand [for Nutella] has been greater than originally expected,” said Vicki Dunn, the executive director of dining services at the university.
“Students have been filling cps of Nutella to-go in Ferris Booth Commons and taking the full jars out of John Jay, which means we’re going through product faster than anticipated,” she added.
In fairness, we’d probably be nicking jars of it too. It is pretty delicious, especially on toast.

Who knew hazelnuts could be so delicious?
Anyway, despite the fact that Nutella could cost the dining hall a whopping $250,000 per year, Ms Dunn says that the university will not stop serving it.
“People love their Nutella. People are going to go crazy [if they stop serving it], I’m not surprised,” said one student.
Instead of getting rid of the chocolate spread, the university has said that it will limit the amount of other high-demand items, like lobster tails. Fair enough. We’d happily go without lobster tails if it meant that we’d get more Nutella in the long run.
We’re not sure if we could eat 100 pounds of the stuff like the students at Columbia but by God, we’d give it a fair whack.
