Airline go above and beyond to help a grieving passenger

Megan Roantree

We need more staff like this everywhere!

Grief is awful, there is no two ways about it. And while it is going to be awful no matter where you are, we reckon an giant busy airport is probably one of the worst places you can be when you get bad news.

This is where 22-year-old Nikki Griffith was when she found out her father had died.

Nikki was on her way to board an Air New Zealand plane when she got the tragic news, she then fell to the ground sobbing.

Several people came to help her and from then on the support she received from the Airline was beyond the call of duty.

Nikki took to Facebook to share her story on Air New Zealand’s page.

She explains that after people came to her side after collapsing, they took her into a quiet room and helped her as best they could.

“Angie gave me hugs and made a few phone calls for me, to make sure someone would be there to collect me in Napier as soon as my flight landed. Jodie returned with the water, more hugs and had also changed my seat to the very back row and had blocked off the seat next to me so I had some privacy. A man named Jamie came in to check if my flight had started boarding yet as well as making sure I had a bottle of water and some snacks to help with the shock. I was personally escorted by Angie and Jodie through the back of the airport, to the gate and they came with me to board the plane and ensure I was taken care of.”

Even when she boarded the plane, the on flight staff made sure to look after her.

“When [the flight attendants] had a rare spare moment they would sit next to me and give me a cuddle, make sure I had eaten something as well as drinking plenty of water and tea.” She said.

She ended the post with a heartfelt thank you.

“It was an extremely tough time made a lot easier by your fantastic staff. I will be eternally grateful for how I was treated and I’m sure my dad would have been so proud that his little girl was looked after in such a difficult time. Thank you so much Air New Zealand.”

To make matters harder on her, Nikki’s fathers funeral was the same day as her birthday sharing on Facebook:

“I will remember my 23rd birthday as the day we had to lay my dad to rest.”

“It was a truly beautiful day and it warms my heart that there were so many people there for my father.”

While Nikki’s loss will always be incredibly difficult, the help along the way and the kindness of strangers certainly showed her that there is some good in the world.
