An Estimated 10,000 Hit Dublin Streets To #MarchForChoice

"The time is right for us, the Irish people."

Thousands took to the streets of Dublin today for the fourth annual #MarchForChoice.

The pro-choice march sees women campaigning for greater access to abortion under the 8th amendment.

The march began at the Garden of Remembrance and finished at Merrion Square, with many well-known politicians taking part. Claire Brophy, a spokeswoman for the Abortion Rights Campaign, told the Irish Times: “This is the last march before the general election and demonstrates that this is an election issue for the vast majority of people.” Colm O’Gorman, executive director of Amnesty International Ireland, added that the government need to face what is a violation of women’s rights. He said: “It’s not good enough for politicians to say, ‘now is not the right time.’ The time may not be right for you – but the time is right for us, the Irish people. “It’s time for political leadership. It’s time to catch up with the majority of Irish people who want progressive laws in Ireland on abortion. It’s time to catch up with the 81 per cent of people in this country who want to see abortion laws that require the appeal of the eighth amendment.”
