Did you get this reaction?

With birthdays, weddings, confirmations and everything in between, it’s safe to say you’ll be buying a good few presents in your lifetime.

Even if you’re not a great gift giver, you always put effort into buying something to someone special, right? And you really hope they will like it, and actually use it.

Apparently, there are certain terms or things people can say that indicates that they don’t like a gift they have been given.

According to Metro, a new survey has indicated the most common phrases people say when they are hiding the fact they hate a present.

The most popular is, “Thank you, it’s lovely”, followed by, “This is really useful”. What they really mean is, “It’s lovely, but not for me” and “Why did you buy me this?”

Here is the full list of replies:

  • ‘It’s lovely’
  • ‘This is really useful’
  • ‘Thanks so much – I nearly bought this for myself’
  • ‘What a lovely surprise’
  • ‘You shouldn’t have’
  • ‘This is so lovely and it’s great because it goes with everything’
  • ‘What an interesting gift’
  • ‘I love it – where did you get it?’ (so I can return it)
  • ‘It was so nice of you to think of me’
  • ‘Wow – I can’t believe how well you know my taste’
