Starting out as a personal project, Jeff Kirschner posted his first Instagram picture on the 13th August 2012 with the #Litterati hashtag. Finding inspiration for the movement from his environmentally conscious daughter, Jeff began documenting pictures of rubbish he came across in the street before disposing of it properly.
Kirschner, who found himself nominated for a Shorty Award in the Activism category launched the website The Digital Landfill after the Instagram hashtag became popular. Realising that all images of rubbish had the potential to be geo-tagged, Kirschner could track the worst areas.
