Last year, Goodall’s inaugural Best Scone competition really captured the imagination of the Irish public, receiving over 100 entries, and this year Goodall’s is opening nominations for its ‘Best Scone’ competition from 17th June 2013.
Irish brand Goodall’s, renowned for its high quality range of flavourings, colourings, herbs, spices and seasonings, is calling for people to nominate the place where they can buy their most delicious scone. Whether it be a cafe, hotel, restaurant or local shop or deli, Goodall’s wants to celebrate the best scones that Ireland has to offer.
Nominations are via twitter and facebook. Simply name the scone, where it’s available and tweet the nomination to @GoodallsIreland, using the hashtag #bestscone. Or for facebook, nominations can be submitted on the Goodall’s facebook page.
Ten finalists will be selected and the public can vote for their favourite scone at www.goodalls.ie. The public vote will make up 50% of the overall vote with the remaining 50%, judged by a select panel of Goodall’s tasters, which includes the 2012 winner of Best Scone, Ritchie Fenner from Caffé Formenti and Roisin O’Shea from Goodall’s.
In 2012, Carlow’s Caffé Formenti was awarded Ireland’s Best Scone, receiving thousands of votes from the public. Ritchie Fenner, Proprietor of Caffé Formenti adds:
“We have a loyal customer base at Caffé Formenti but winning Goodall’s Best Scone last year really elevated our profile. We’ve have had new customers travel from far and wide to sample what is said to be ‘Ireland’s Best Scone’ and the customer feedback has been amazing”.
Roisin O’Shea, Marketing Manager at Goodall’s explains:
“Scones are an Irish institution. We all know scones can vary from the mediocre to the truly great and everyone has their own ‘special’ recipe – often handed down through the generations.
“This competition is about celebrating the best of Irish baking – not the fancy stuff but the tasty everyday stuff, that when it’s done well can be fantastic. It’s a great opportunity to nominate your local hero. It might be a simple café that might never be in line for Michelin stars, but one that does a great scone and that deserves to be recognised.”
Nominations are open for one week from 17th June and close on 24th June 2013. The ten finalists will be announced on 1st July 2013 and the final judging will take place at a gala lunch for the finalists in Dublin’s Merrion Hotel. The winner will receive €1,000 and a specially commissioned ‘Best Scone 2013’ plaque for their eatery or outlet.
Sadly, it seems we can’t nominate Granny. Then again, it probably wouldn’t be fair on the competition…
