Bookworms’ First Love: Ten Reasons The Library Was The Best Place Ever As Kids

It might not have been the coolest place to hang out when you were smaller, but it’s a place that only holds good memories for us.

We’re talking you, a couch, a quiet corner, a book and just a smidgeon of imagination... yes, the library.

Here are ten reasons it was only the greatest place ever...

1. The Card

As a member you got a card, maybe even with your face on it. It almost looked like a credit card and looked uber cool in your dinky purse with a few coins.

2. Peace And Quiet

It’s not just grown-ups that crave a bit of peace you know... a couple of screaming siblings at home could have any kid running to a quiet corner in the library looking for a bit of peace.

3. The Series

Whole series of books including The Babysitter’s Club, Sweet Valley High and Goosebumps were at hand to read. The challenge of making your way through the shelf to finish the series was something magical. Here’s cursing the kid who borrowed the book you wanted next...

4. Sex Education

Let’s face it. We learnt all about the birds and the bees from sneaking down to the adult section to read a bit of Danielle Steele.

5. Lovely Lady

Every library has a “lovely lady”. She was just so lovely.

6. Cheap

Obviously not something we thought about at the time but there’s no wonder our parents were so delighted with the reading habit. A free babysitter for a few cent a year? Winning.

7. Nothing Beats A Book

The world of bookworms is fast being taken over by Kindle converts. Not that we’re complaining, we’re all up for promoting the need of a good book, Kindle or paperback... but really though, nothing beats an actual book.

Beast has wise words. 

8. The Wait

Putting your name down for the next Harry Potter/Hardy Boys/The Famous Five book made you feel invincible.

9. The Choice

Shelves upon shelves, rows upon rows, boxes upon boxes, there was an infinity of choice.

10. All-Weather Activity

Whether it was a quick pop in to grab a book for a sunny day or an evening spent there with the lashing rain outside, the library really was an all-weather activity.
