We might have had a few mild days this week but we’re being warned that the winter is not over yet.
Temperatures are set to fall to a very icy -4°c.
We got the tip-off from Met Eireann yesterday, but now a certain somebody has confirmed their findings.
Ireland’s best-known amateur meteorologist, the legendary Co Donegal postman Michael Gallagher, said that just because the birds are tweeting and flowers are coming into bloom does not mean we’ve escaped the harsh winter yet.
In fact, he reckons freezing temperatures could be just around the corner.
Michael told the Irish Sun: “I know we’ve escaped with a relatively mild winter but I think there will be a serious sting in the tail.
“People say that birds are singing and flowers are blooming so early but I think that’s a major sign of a late winter.
“A 95-year-old man used to tell me that birds singing in winter was not them singing at all but crying and that cold weather was still on the way.”
Michael, from Glenfin, fears we will need to wrap up well next month as well.
He added: “I think February could be very cold indeed and I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a lot of snow. I think we could have a number of cold snaps between now and March and even then it could be cold after that.”

Just because the birds are singing, doesn't mean winter is over...
