The world is full of beautiful moments and thankfully someone managed to catch this one on camera. We couldn’t help but get a little misty-eyed when we watched this lovely clip from New Zealand.
EuroNews reports that New Zealand’s parliament voted in favour of allowing same-sex marriage earlier this afternoon. The result was met with a round of applause, cheers, a standing ovation and a touching, spur-of-the-moment rendition of ‘Pokarekare Ana’ a traditional Maori love song.
New Zealand is the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to amend their current Marriage Act to allow same-sex couples to walk down the aisle. 77 of 121 members of parliament voted in favour of the amendment.
“Two-thirds of parliament have endorsed marriage equality,” said Louisa Wall, an openly gay Labour Party MP.
“It shows that we are building on human rights as a country,” she added.
New Zealand is now the 13th country in the world to legalise same-sex marriages and for many people it marks a major milestone.
“I have a boyfriend, so it means we can get married, which is a good thing,” said Timothy Atkins, a student who was present at the parliament when the news broke.
“It’s important to be seen as equal under the law,” he added.
We couldn’t agree more. Fair play New Zealand, fair play.
