Save money and do some good for the world around you by using simple measures to conserve energy in the home. If you’re not sure where to start – don’t worry! We’ll be bringing you one great energy-saving tip every day for the next few weeks.
Defrost your freezer
Do you remember your Mammy defrosting the freezer every few months when you were growing up? There’s a reason why she did this. As well as keeping your freezer in tip-top condition, regular defrosting ensures that you also keep your electricity bill down too.
You see when frost builds up inside your freezer compartment, your freezer has to work extra-hard to keep food cool. This means that it uses even more energy than normal.
Defrost and clean the inside of your fridge and freezer at least every six months to ensure that it it’s clean and functioning well.
Another way that you can save money is to make sure that your fridge/freezer is positioned in a cool place, not next to the cooker where possible and not in the path of direct sunlight.
This means that your fridge/freezer stays at a consistently cooler temperature and doesn’t have to use more energy to keep the temperature regulated on the inside.
How long has it been since you last defrosted your freezer? If it’s been more than six months make a point of doing it at some stage over the next week. You won’t regret it!
