“Do Your Homework. Take Calculated Risks.” – Her.ie Speaks to Business Owner Catriona McMorris About Living The Dream

Starting your own business is the dream for many, and Catriona McMorris is one woman who made it happen. Catriona, who completed the Portobello Makeup Artistry course in 2011, now runs REVEAL Makeup Salon & Training Studios in Tullamore Co. Offaly. Here, she looks back on her studies, and her start-up, and offers advice to others who might want to do the same.

*   What was your background/education before you decided to attend Portobello Institute?

Before Portobello Institute, my background was in Sales & Marketing & Training. I had studied Commerce in NUI Galway and from there completed a Masters In International Tourism with the University of Limerick. Following a period of travel and work abroad I returned to Dublin in 2007 where I worked in a variety of companies in marketing promotions and campaigns and eventually worked towards sales training and mentoring of students. I always took great enjoyment in teaching and mentoring students and sales teams so it’s one of the main reasons I decided to incorporate a Makeup School to the Salon in 2011.

 
  *   What made you decide to enrol in further education?

Makeup was always a passion and a hobby. I loved everything about it, trying out new styles and showing others how to do it themselves. I loved doing makeup on friends and making them feel good. Initially it was a hobby but I started to attend night classes and workshops in Dublin trying to perfect the skill and learn new things. 

  *   Why was Portobello Institute your first choice?

In 2011 I decided to take the course at Portobello Institute as it was attractive for numerous reasons; I could continue to work, classes were small which meant I could ask more questions and get more intense tuition. The ITEC qualification meant I received an internationally recognised qualification for my work which I could use. Above all there was a great atmosphere, tutors were excellent  and flexible and wanted you to do well.

  *   You took on a part-time course, how did this fit into your schedule and lifestyle?

I was used to taking courses and classes at night so it fit into my schedule quite well. Coming up to exams were intense as you are studying for the written exam and focusing on creating a really strong portfolio which takes a lot of time and focus. So yes, it meant sacrificing a few weekends but overall it was enjoyable, it didn’t feel like work and I was happy to give the extra time to it.

  *   What are the main advantages of engaging in further education at Portobello Institute?

I suppose you get to meet other like minded people who like that are working in completely different areas and who are trying out new things and developing a different skill set. You do get a lot of support from tutors and the department as you go through your course as well as networking and making new contacts.

  *   What skills do you feel you developed from your course?

My immediate skills in Makeup Artistry and Beauty improved immensely but in addition you understand the importance of the business element to what you do for example preparing a strong portfolio when presenting to agencies and clients for work. Knowing how to conduct and present yourself as a Professional Makeup Artist was essential for me so I could progress forward in the industry.

  *   How did you implement these skills when it came to launching your business?

The idea for the business had been a dream of mine for years but like so many I never thought it would become a reality so soon. In times of recession things like makeup and beauty are not looked upon sometimes as areas of development but I felt with all my experience and qualifications I could offer something different that would appeal to today’s market. Following my course at Portobello I felt I had achieved the icing on the cake in terms of study and I finally had the confidence and courage to really step forward as a full time Makeup Artist.

  *   What advice would you offer to other Irish women who wish to open their own business?

Do your homework. Take calculated risks. Assess the market place and see where your idea fits in. You need to be prepared especially when it comes to asking for investment into your business. You may want everything straight away but focus small and build your way to the big dream. I am a long way from my final vision of where I would like my business to be but each day I am moving closer to that goal. Take heed of what is happening in your industry, trends and changes. Join business groups and involve yourself in local events and activities to promote yourself your business and make new connections. Don’t sweat the small stuff and continue to enjoy what you do!
