Dog says goodbye to owner at funeral proving he is, indeed, man’s best friend

Jade Hayden

Dogs.

They’re the best, right? Of course they are.

Dogs are even better when they do something heartbreaking and adorable related to an owner’s untimely death, as it proves that the dog was not just loyal during life when treats were available, but in death when they were not available also.

Gut-wrenching.

A few weeks back, a dog in the States stayed with his owner when they fell to their death while hiking until their body could be recovered.

He even barked to alert park rangers as to his whereabouts.

The best boy.

Now, another dog has done something similar in the face of death and gone to their owner’s funeral, stood up at the casket, and licked his face one last time.

Honestly like, what in God’s name have we done to deserve such creatures?

The dog in question is named Chief and he acted as a therapy dog for his owner, a 76-year-old veteran, named Bill Schiller.

During the years before his death, Bill began to develop dementia meaning that partner Anne-Marie Sibthorp and Chief stood by him every day until the end.

Anne-Marie told WCNC that the dog and Bill had a special bond.

“There’s a chemistry between a person and a dog when they’re really special, and he was really special for Chief and Chief was enormously for him,” she said. “They bonded; they belonged together.”

In April of this year, Bill passed away in a care home. His funeral was attended by his friends, family, and Chief, who stood up on his hind legs to lean over the coffin and give him one last kiss.

“And he just stood there and looked at Bill like he was telling him goodbye,” said Anne-Marie. “It was really sweet. It meant a lot to Chief to be able to do that and he knows now that Daddy’s okay.”

Heartbroken?

Yeah, same.
