When it comes to Downton Abbey, we’re all massive fans of the hilarious Dowager Countess of Grantham (also known as the amazing Dame Maggie Smith). Needless to say, we were traumatised when we heard that Maggie will have to reconsider her part on the show.

According to the Sunday Mirror, the actress had to be rushed to a specialist cardiac unit after she started experiencing severe chest pains.

The 77-year-old star was admitted to the Wellington Hospital in London on Friday morning and underwent a series of emergency tests. She was discharged later that day after her condition was stabilised by doctors.

The health scare has already added to fears that the Dowager will not be returning for another series of Downton. Apparently Maggie has been told to consider health advice that was given to her by doctors before she agrees to sign up for a new series.

Maggie is currently in the process of recovering from her ordeal

“It was a big scare for Maggie and she was really worried because she was in a lot of pain. It was extremely distressing for her but she did the right thing and made sure she got to hospital as soon as possible,” said a source close to the actress.

“Maggie loves her work and her performances in Downton have helped make it a worldwide success. But she will have to think very carefully now about whether she stays in the show. Her health always comes first and I am sure she will take advice from experts,” the source added.

Dame Maggie, who has previously fought breast cancer, is said to be recovering well from her scare. We hope she gets well soon.
