Last night Twitter was alight with people discussing Michaella McCollum’s first interview since her release from a Peruvian prison.
Michaella, and an accomplice, Melissa Reid, were imprisoned in 2013 for six years and eight months after they admitted to attempting to smuggle cocaine worth €1.8 million from Peru to Spain.
On Thursday, Michaella was freed on parole after serving more than two years.
She conducted her first interview with RTÉ last night and the reactions have been mixed.
The topic is still trending on Twitter this morning.
Highlights of the interview include Michaella discussing the split moment she decided to smuggle drugs.
She is filled with regret and acknowledges that her actions could have had detrimental effects.
“I probably would have had a lot of blood on my hands,” she said.
“I potentially could have filled Europe full of a lot of drugs.
“I could have potentially killed a lot of people, not directly but I could have caused a lot of harm to people.”
She continued:
“I made a decision in a moment of madness.
“I’m not a bad person. I want to demonstrate that I’m a good person.”
