First-Ever Female Councillor Elected In Saudi Arabia

UPDATE: The Guardian has since reported that uo to 17 women in Saudi Arabia have been elected as local councillors. Salma bint Hizab al-Oteibi is the first woman to win a seat on a municipal council in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has lifted its ban on women participating in elections and yesterday's vote saw Salma take a seat in the Mecca province, according to the BBC.

978 women stood as candidates in comparison to 5,938 men while 130,000 women voted in comparison to 1.3 million men. In a historic day for the Saudi Arabian kingdom, this was the first time women were allowed to both vote and run for election.
